The Faculty of Psychology of Yogyakarta State University (FP UNY) once again demonstrated its commitment to strengthening academic internationalization through a Visiting Professor program at the Department of Counselor Education and Psychology, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). In this program, Dr. Suwarjo, M.Si., a lecturer from the Faculty of Psychology of UNY, served as a guest lecturer and resource person for the course Psychodynamic and Humanistic Counseling Approach and Practice.
The Visiting Professor program was conducted over two days, on October 28–29, 2025, and was attended by approximately 40 students from the Department of Counselor Education and Psychology, UPM. This program formed part of an international academic collaboration aimed at enriching students’ scholarly perspectives, particularly in the field of counseling, by integrating psychodynamic and humanistic approaches within the context of professional practice.
Dr. Suwarjo delivered a comprehensive discussion on the theoretical foundations and practical applications of psychodynamic and humanistic approaches in counseling, with a particular emphasis on understanding personality dynamics, the therapeutic relationship, and client-centered counseling processes. Students were encouraged to explore how past experiences, interpersonal relationships, and humanistic aspects of clients influence counseling processes and psychological change. The learning activities were conducted interactively through case discussions and reflections on counseling practice. This approach enabled students to connect theory with real-world practice while also enhancing cross-cultural understanding in counseling services.
The Visiting Professor program served as a strategic platform for strengthening international collaboration between the Faculty of Psychology of UNY and Universiti Putra Malaysia, particularly in the areas of education and the development of counseling scholarship. Through this academic exchange, UPM students gained new insights from the perspective of an Indonesian academic, while the Faculty of Psychology of UNY expanded its global network and enhanced the institution’s international visibility.
The Faculty of Psychology of UNY hopes to continue developing sustainable international collaborations in the future, including faculty exchanges, joint teaching initiatives, collaborative research, and the development of curricula aligned with global standards.
