Outbound Visiting Professor: International Academic Collaboration in Assessment in Counseling at Universiti Putra Malaysia

The Faculty of Psychology of Yogyakarta State University (FP UNY) once again implemented the Outbound Visiting Professor program as part of its efforts to strengthen international academic networking. On this occasion, Prof. Farida Agus, a faculty member of the Faculty of Psychology of UNY, was appointed as a guest lecturer for the course Assessment in Counseling at the Department of Counselor Education and Psychology, Faculty of Educational Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
This academic activity was conducted over two days, on October 28–29, 2025, and was attended by 40 students from the Department of Counselor Education and Psychology, Faculty of Educational Studies, UPM. The program aimed to enhance students’ competencies in understanding and applying assessment processes as a fundamental foundation in professional counseling practice.
Prof. Farida Agus emphasized that assessment is not merely a process of data collection, but a crucial step in comprehensively understanding clients’ needs, problems, and potentials. Students were encouraged to view assessment as an integral and continuous component of the counseling process, from the initial stage and intervention planning to the evaluation of service outcomes. The learning process was conducted in a participatory manner through case discussions, reflections on practical experiences, and cross-cultural exchanges of perspectives. This interaction fostered academic dialogue between faculty and students while enriching UPM students’ understanding of counseling assessment practices from an international perspective.
The Outbound Visiting Professor program represents a tangible form of academic collaboration between the Faculty of Psychology of UNY and Universiti Putra Malaysia in the field of counselor education. Through this initiative, the Faculty of Psychology of UNY continues to strengthen its role in the global development of counseling scholarship, while also promoting sustainable collaboration in teaching, research, and curriculum development.
