Student Mobility Program for Internationalization and Academic Collaboration between Students of the Faculty of Psychology of UNY and Universiti Putra Malaysia

The Faculty of Psychology of Yogyakarta State University (FP UNY) has once again strengthened its commitment to internationalization through a student mobility program to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The program was conducted at the Department of Counselor Education and Psychology, Faculty of Educational Studies, UPM, and was participated in by seven undergraduate students from the Psychology Study Program of UNY (Class of 2023). The participating students were Kaila Diyah Nabila, Amadia Kayla Marfudin, Maria Christie Manullang, Khalith Ahmad Muhathir, Tazkia Shafwa Kamila, Farhani Azzahra Putri, and Najma Hikmatul Haq. The program took place over two days, on October 28–29, 2025, as part of efforts to enhance students’ international academic experiences.

During the student mobility program, students from the Faculty of Psychology of UNY had the opportunity to directly engage in various academic activities at UPM. The courses attended included Counseling Theories and Cognitive Behavioral Practices, Mental Health Consultation, Humanistic Counseling Theories and Practices, and Family Counseling. Through these courses, students gained broader insights into contemporary counseling approaches, evidence-based practices, and the dynamics of mental health services in an international context.

Participation in international classrooms provided students with valuable cross-cultural learning experiences while also creating opportunities for academic dialogue between Indonesian and Malaysian students. The participants were not only involved in lectures but also actively engaged in discussions, case studies, and reflections on counseling practices from diverse perspectives.

Students who took part in the program reported that the student mobility experience was highly meaningful and academically enriching. Through direct involvement in lectures and discussions at Universiti Putra Malaysia, students gained new perspectives on counseling theories and practices within a global context. This cross-cultural learning experience not only enhanced their academic understanding but also increased their self-confidence, communication skills, and readiness to become future professionals in the fields of psychology and counseling.

The student mobility program serves as an important platform for the Faculty of Psychology of UNY to equip students with global competencies, including academic excellence, cross-cultural communication skills, and an understanding of counseling practices at the international level. Through collaboration with Universiti Putra Malaysia, students are expected to broaden their academic horizons while strengthening their preparedness to face the challenges of psychology and counseling professions in the global era.

This activity also reinforces the collaborative relationship between the Faculty of Psychology of UNY and Universiti Putra Malaysia in the field of education and opens further opportunities for continued collaboration, including student exchange programs, joint teaching initiatives, and the development of curricula aligned with international standards.
