Enhancing Psychological Well-being: UNY Psychology Trains Indonesian Migrant Workers in Malaysia on Simple Self-Care Practices

Kuala Lumpur, July 10, 2025 – The Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (FP UNY), through its Clinical Psychology lecturer team, conducted a community service program entitled “Training on Early Detection of Mental Health and Simple Self-Care for Indonesian Migrant Workers in Malaysia.” This initiative was held in collaboration with Sanggar Bimbingan of the Special Branch Leadership of Muhammadiyah (PCIM) Malaysia, as a form of concern for the psychological well-being of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) employed abroad, particularly in Malaysia.

The program took place on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at 7:30 PM Kuala Lumpur time, at Sanggar Bimbingan PCIM Malaysia, and was attended by PMI living and working in the area. In the opening remarks, PCIM Malaysia representatives expressed appreciation for FP UNY’s attention and support in efforts to safeguard the mental health of migrant workers.

The training was designed to be interactive and participatory. The first session delivered material on early detection of mental health conditions, influencing factors, the negative impacts of unmanaged mental health issues, and examples of simple self-care practices relevant to PMI. Participants then engaged in group discussions and interactive Q&A sessions, where they shared personal experiences and explored practical strategies for maintaining mental health while working abroad.

Additionally, participants practiced simple self-care techniques such as getting adequate sleep, light exercise, butterfly hug, thought stopping, and breathing relaxation techniques. These hands-on practices received positive responses as they were considered practical and easy to apply in daily life.

The activity was conducted by FP UNY lecturers: Dr. Kartika Nur Fathiyah, M.Si.; Dr. Farida Harahap, M.Si.; Annisa Nur Harwiningtyas, M.Psi.; and Dinarista Yulisa Ediputri, M.Psi., Psikolog.

Through this program, the Faculty of Psychology UNY reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the psychological well-being of Indonesian migrant workers while strengthening international collaboration between higher education institutions and Indonesian community organizations abroad.
