Preventing Child Marriage: FP UNY Conducts Peer Educator Training in Gunungkidul

Wonosari, July 22–23, 2025 – The Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (FP UNY), through one of its Community Service (PkM) teams, has taken an active role in supporting child marriage prevention efforts in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This commitment was realized through the program “Peer Educator Training for the Prevention of Child Marriage” held at SMA Pembangunan 1 Wonosari, Gunungkidul, over two days, Monday–Tuesday, July 22–23, 2025.

The initiative was a strategic collaboration between FP UNY and the Educational Institution of Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama (LP Ma’arif NU) DIY, following the signing of a cooperation agreement by Dr. Siti Rohmah Nurhayati, M.Si., Dean of FP UNY, and Dr. Tadkiroatun Musfiroh, M.Hum., Head of LP Ma’arif NU PWNU DIY. The training also coincided with the commemoration of National Children’s Day (HAN) 2025, themed “Strong Children, Strong Indonesia Towards Golden Indonesia 2045.”

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5 (Gender Equality), the program emphasized the critical role of young people in eliminating child marriage practices. Throughout the training, participants received capacity-building materials covering self-awareness, decision-making, effective communication, gender issues and rights, as well as the impacts of child marriage.

The program was officially opened by the Dean of FP UNY and facilitated by Karsiyati, M.Psi.T., and Dr. Annisa Reginasari, M.A., with support from four co-facilitators. Thirty students from various high schools and vocational schools across Gunungkidul took part in the sessions. Beyond classroom learning, participants also engaged in digital content creation and strategies for amplifying child marriage prevention messages among their peers. At the conclusion of the training, students expressed positive feedback on the program’s relevance and impact.

Through this initiative, FP UNY hopes that the trained peer educators will serve as agents of change within their schools and communities, continuing to raise awareness on the importance of child protection and contributing to a brighter, more prosperous future.
