UNY Students Introduce Eco Enzyme Innovation for Household Waste Management in Kulon Progo

Kulon Progo – Students of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) participating in the 2026 Community Service Program (KKN) organized a socialization and hands-on training activity on the production of eco enzyme for the community of Gegunung Hamlet, Bumirejo Village, Lendah District, Kulon Progo Regency. The activity was part of the flagship program of KKN-R GEN 19 group, carried out on February 7 and February 9, 2026, under the supervision of Dr. Pasca Tri Kaloka, S.Pd., M.Pd.
The program was initiated by Nadya Aiswhara Harmona, a student from the Faculty of Psychology at UNY, together with her KKN team consisting of Bayu Widyatmoko, Adeliansyah Khamasa, Azzam Abdul Aziz, Desy Ramawaty Sijabat, Amadia Kayla Marfudin, Frizyla Qarinza Tsabita, Zahra Qutrotu Diswara, and Marcela Cahya Mustika K.
The activity was motivated by the waste management issues still found in Gegunung Hamlet, particularly related to organic and inorganic waste. Some residents still pile up waste in their yards or burn it to reduce the volume. Such practices can cause negative environmental impacts, including air pollution and increased health risks if waste is not properly managed. In response to this issue, the UNY KKN students organized a socialization program introducing the production of eco enzyme, a multifunctional liquid produced through the fermentation of organic kitchen waste such as fruit peels and vegetable scraps. Eco enzyme was chosen because its production process is relatively simple, the ingredients are easily obtained from household waste, and it has various practical uses in daily life.
Besides helping reduce organic waste accumulation, eco enzyme can also be utilized as a natural cleaner, liquid fertilizer, and deodorizer. Furthermore, if developed consistently, eco enzyme production also has the potential to provide economic value for the community. The activity targeted members of the Women Farmers Group (Kelompok Wanita Tani/KWT) and local residents who play an important role in household management and community activities. Their involvement is expected to support the sustainability of eco enzyme implementation within the hamlet.
The program consisted of socialization, presentations, and practical demonstrations on how to produce eco enzyme using organic kitchen waste. The activity was attended by 18 participants and was conducted interactively, with participants actively engaging in discussions and asking questions related to household waste management. Participants showed strong enthusiasm throughout the activity. Many expressed interest in trying to produce eco enzyme at home as a simple solution for managing organic waste more responsibly.
The activity resulted in several tangible outputs, including eco enzyme products, documentation in the form of photos and videos, and an eco enzyme guide module that can be used by residents for independent practice. Through this initiative, the UNY students hope that the community will become more aware of the importance of environmentally friendly waste management and adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives.
