Collaborative Public Lecture between DisPsiAL and the Faculty of Psychology UNY: Strengthening the Role of Psychology in Disaster Preparedness and Response

Yogyakarta, 12 February 2026 – The Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) held a Collaborative Public Lecture in partnership with Dinas Psikologi TNI Angkatan Laut (DisPsiAL) at the Teleconference Room, 4th Floor, Digital Library Building, UNY. The event was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the strategic cooperation between the two institutions in the areas of education, training, and student capacity development.
The public lecture featured two distinguished speakers from DisPsiAL. First Lieutenant (Lettu Laut/KH) Giri Putra Riyanto, S.Psi., delivered a presentation on The Role of Psychology in Disaster Preparedness and Management from both psychological and military psychology perspectives. In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of mental readiness, psychological resilience, and structured response systems in addressing crisis and disaster situations. The military psychology approach illustrated how discipline, coordination, and both individual and team endurance are critical factors in ensuring effective disaster response.
The second speaker, Lieutenant Colonel (Letkol Laut/P) Pris Arie Wibowo, M.Psi., Psychologist, shared DisPsiAL’s experiences in various humanitarian missions and disaster response operations. Through real case presentations and a brief simulation of disaster preparedness procedures, participants gained practical insights into on-site psychological assessment, victim assistance, and psychological support for personnel involved in humanitarian missions.
The event was attended by 233 undergraduate students from the 2024 cohort of the Psychology Study Program, along with students from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and Faculty of Languages, Arts, and Culture. Lecturers from the Faculty of Psychology UNY were also present and actively engaged in the dynamic discussion session.
The collaboration between the Faculty of Psychology UNY and DisPsiAL has been sustained over the years, including the regular placement of UNY Psychology students for internships at DisPsiAL. This partnership provides students with valuable opportunities to gain direct professional experience in applied psychology, particularly in disaster contexts, humanitarian missions, and psychological support within military settings.
The organization of this public lecture reflects the Faculty of Psychology UNY’s commitment to supporting sustainable development, particularly through enhancing the quality of higher education that is responsive to societal needs, promoting mental health and psychological well-being in crisis situations, and strengthening strategic partnerships between higher education institutions and state agencies. Through this initiative, students are expected to deepen their understanding of psychology’s broad contribution to building individual and community resilience, while also being encouraged to take an active role in disaster preparedness and response efforts in Indonesia.
