UNY Students Hold Parenting Class “Great Parents, Strong Children” in Kulon Progo

Kulon Progo – Students of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) participating in the 2026 Community Service Program (KKN) organized a parenting class titled “Great Parents, Strong Children” at SD Tegiri, Hargowilis, Kokap District, Kulon Progo Regency. The activity was conducted on Saturday, March 9, 2026, as part of the KKNRGEN-6 group program, under the supervision of Dr. Rony Siswo Setiaji, M.Pd.

The activity was initiated by Annisa Putri, a student from the Faculty of Psychology at UNY, together with her KKN team consisting of Salsabila Adiningsih, Nabila Trisna Safitri, Muhammad Khairul Hadi, Wahyu Aprilia Sari, Elsa Septia Paramita, Nanda Siti Khotijah, Virzie Putri Sidabalok, Najma Hikmatul Haq, and Bintang Jelang Ramadhan. This parenting class was organized based on the results of initial observations and discussions with the school, which revealed that many parents still lack sufficient understanding of healthy parenting practices and child development stages at the elementary school level. Such conditions may lead to miscommunication between parents and children as well as parenting approaches that do not fully align with children’s developmental needs.

Through this activity, the KKN students aimed to provide education for parents about positive parenting practices while helping them understand children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. With better understanding, parents are expected to provide more appropriate support for their children's growth and development. The activity, which took place from 08:00 to 12:00 WIB, was attended by approximately 100 participants, consisting of parents and students of SD Tegiri. The program included material presentations, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and joint reflection activities between parents and children.

During the reflection session, participants were invited to reflect on the relationship that has been built between parents and children. This session aimed to strengthen emotional closeness and encourage more open communication within families. The methods used in this activity included psychoeducation, interactive discussion, and guided reflection, allowing participants not only to understand the material cognitively but also to emotionally experience the importance of healthy family relationships.

Participants showed strong enthusiasm throughout the program. Parents actively participated in discussions, shared their experiences, and asked questions related to parenting practices at home. As a follow-up, at the end of the activity participants were given a worksheet containing a commitment agreement between parents and children. This worksheet serves as a reminder for both parties to build more positive relationships and support children’s development in a sustainable manner.

Through this activity, the UNY students hope to strengthen the synergy between families and schools in supporting children’s optimal development while demonstrating the tangible contribution of higher education institutions to improving the quality of parenting and education in the community.
