Student Engagement in Visiting Professorships: A Cross-Cultural Academic Experience

The successful execution of UNY's Visiting Professor Outbound program at UPSI on April 2–3, 2026, is attributed to a comprehensive ecosystem of engagement involving all facets of the academic community. Transcending the scope of a mere guest lecture, this series of events was meticulously designed as a multidimensional immersive experience, incorporating the active participation of students and the exchange of best practices among administrative staff. This holistic approach distinguishes the program from conventional academic visits.
UNY students enrolled in the mobility program were far from passive spectators. They assumed a central role as campus ambassadors and on-site facilitators. On the first day, students diligently guided Dr. Siti Rohmah Nurhayati to lecture hall B08-2-BK34 and assisted with minor logistical coordination, ensuring the session's smooth progression. However, their most significant contribution lay in their academic participation. Beyond attending the Educational Psychology lecture, UNY students integrated with their UPSI counterparts in other scheduled courses, including KSH2013 Clinical Psychology and KSY3603 Substance Abuse. This direct involvement provided them with invaluable firsthand exposure to the teaching methodologies, curriculum structure, and discursive norms practiced at the partner university—an experience unparalleled by domestic classroom learning alone.
Simultaneously, administrative staff from the Faculty of Psychology at UNY engaged in a strategic parallel agenda. On April 2, 2026, from 10:00 to 13:00 local time, they participated in an Administrative Staff Mobility and Sharing Session held at the Professional Meeting Room of UPSI. Within this productive closed forum, UNY and UPSI staff exchanged insights on financial administration management, digital archiving systems, and efficient academic service strategies. This exchange of best practices is critical for elevating the quality of governance and operational standards at both institutions to align with world-class university benchmarks.
To further enrich the participants' perspectives, UPSI hosted a comprehensive campus tour. The UNY delegation explored the magnificent Tuanku Bainun Library, a modern architectural icon housing a vast literary collection, and visited the UPSI National Education Museum. This excursion transcended leisure; it served as an endeavor to comprehend the educational philosophy and the historical development of teacher training in Malaysia, which forms the very foundation of UPSI's identity. Consequently, the program successfully constructed a robust bridge of understanding, extending beyond the realm of psychological science into the spheres of higher education management and cross-cultural comprehension.
